There has been rapid technological development in the field of Radiology in the latter part of the twentieth century and the twentyfirst century so far. Advances in other branches of medicine also occurred at the same time. These gave rise to the demand for radiologists to subspecialise in specific specialities within the field of Radiology and Imaging. The advances in the field of mammography, breast ultrasound, various breast biopsy techniques and lesion localisation procedures resulted in the birth of the ‘Breast Radiologist’!

A number of breast imaging experts trained in India and some others who were trained abroad and returned to India felt the need for an educational platform for training the radiologists who wished to subspecialise in Breast imaging. It was obvious that there was a need for subspecialisation, but the need was not optimally matched with the available training opportunities. The vision included a gamut of achievements such as tonurturea national level training platform for radiologists and technologists with teaching methods such as conferences and workshops, to promote welfare of patients with breast diseases, to promote scientific collaboration among it’s members including research, to make guidelines for breast imaging, to construct a robust quality assurance framework, to function as a thinktank and provide expert advice to other medical organisations, with the end result of every person in the country availing world class breast imaging facilities close to their home.

Thirteen founder members came together to formthe BREAST IMAGING SOCIETY under the Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860.
